Dear Ms. Rochat:
On behalf of United Poultry Concerns and our 15,000 members in the
United States, I urge you, please, to cancel your planned promotion,
on September 20, of the diseased avian liver product, foie gras, and
to withdraw your invitation to Michael Ginor of Hudson Valley Foie
Gras from your fundraiser.
Foie gras is produced by forcing a hard pipe down the throats of
tightly restrained ducks and geese several times a day for two or
three weeks prior to slaughtering them. The pipe pumps a
nutritionally deficient slurry of corn mash, oil, water, and salt
into the birds to enlarge their livers to between six and ten times
the liver's normal size. The result is a liver disease that in human
beings is called hepatic lipidosis, a painful condition that requires
the draining of accumulated fluid from the abdomen.
Foie gras production involves the following documented pathologies:
- Bursting of birds' stomachs from force feeding
- Ruptured livers
- Spilling of force-fed slurry from the birds' nostrils
- Bruised and broken bills
- Tumor-like lumps in the birds' throats
- Maggot-infested neck wounds
- Fear behavior in the birds at the approach of the force feeders
with the metal pipes
Please do not serve this repugnant product at your forthcoming
fundraiser on September 20. Please serve a compassionate vegetarian
pate option instead. I look forward to hearing from you as soon as
possible and to posting good news to our members and to the growing
number of people around the world who share our concerns about animal
cruelty and abuse. I appreciate your attention and look forward to
hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Karen Davis, PhD
