Dear UPC Supporters,
We responded immediately on Thursday, March 7, to the news that
30,000 hens had already starved to death after their food was cut off
for 12 days, and that the remaining 170,000 caged hens were going to
be gassed to death over the weekend. UPC president Karen Davis
immediately called activist P.J. McKosky, who organized the rescue of
200 or more hens, working day and night under horrible conditions for
4 days including police harassment.
Early next week, P.J. is driving 100 - 150 hens to Virginia, where 70
to 100 hens will live out the rest of their lives happily at United
Poultry Concerns, 20 hens will go to the Eastern Shore Chicken
Sanctuary in Princess Anne, Md, and ten hens are being adopted by UPC
member Kay Evans in North Carolina. All other rescued hens are being
humanely adopted in Florida with the continued help of Florida Voices
for Animals.
United Poultry Concerns is reimbursing P.J. and his team for travel,
emergency medical care, feeding of the hens, and temporary shelters
prior to driving the hens to Virginia next week. After that, UPC will
provide permanent care for 70 to 100 rescued hens. Rescue costs
incurred by UPC have already mounted to more than $1,000.00.
UPC is requesting emergency financial help for the Cypress Hen Rescue
and Adoption. Every one of these precious hens UPC saved from being
gassed to death in a dark 55-gallon drum with other helpless hens. If
you would like to contribute to our Cypress Hen Emergency Rescue
Fund, please send your tax-deductible check or money order to UPC, PO
Box 150, Machipongo, VA 23405.
Thank you for your help. All donations will help cover expenses
involved in UPC's Cypress Hen Rescue and Adoption. For these hens,
life begins now!
Sincerely,
Karen Davis, President
