AB 236 has been introduced in California to give the Egg Commission
authority over "nutrition research." If enacted, this bill could
prevent future passage of legislation to ban forced molting, the
cruel Salmonella-promoting industry practice of starving hens to
manipulate egg production. The California Egg Commission has close
ties to the egg industry and is currently involved in advertising and
research to promote egg production and sales. Passage of AB 236 could
block animal advocates' efforts to ban forced molting and other cruel
practices such as keeping hens in battery cages. If the Egg
Commission were given authority to promote eggs, they could falsely
argue that eggs are too important to human nutrition for the egg
industry to incur costs that would boost the price of eggs. Say No to
AB 236.
